Glazing for schools and education

Education glazing is governed by two constraints that override everything else: it has to be safe for children who will test it, and it has to be finished inside a holiday window that does not move.

What matters most on this kind of building

Programme certainty over price

A six-week summer window is the whole project. Manufacture is ordered so that materials are on site before the term ends, not so that they arrive during it.

Impact safety beyond the minimum

Part K sets the floor. In corridors, halls and low-level classroom glazing, Class 1 impact laminated is the sensible specification rather than the minimum compliant one.

Restricted opening and fall prevention

Above ground floor, opening lights are restricted to 100mm or fitted with guarding, and parallel-opening sashes avoid leaves swinging into circulation space.

Fire compartment lines

Cross-corridor and stairwell screens are frequently the element that fails a fire risk assessment in older stock, and they need tested EI systems rather than plain wired glass.

Schools and education — common questions

Can glazing work be done in the summer holidays?
Yes, and that is normally how it is programmed. The key is ordering early enough that manufacture is complete before the holiday starts — glass lead times, not install time, are what put these projects at risk.
What glazing is required in school corridors?
Anything in a critical location must be safety glass to Part K. In practice most schools specify Class 1 impact laminated throughout circulation areas, which exceeds the minimum and holds together if struck.
Is Georgian wired glass still acceptable in schools?
It retains a fire integrity rating but performs poorly on impact and will not satisfy Part K in a critical location. Replacement with clear intumescent laminate is the normal upgrade and improves both fire and safety performance.
