Glazing for hotels and hospitality

In hospitality the glazing is judged by a guest at two in the morning. Acoustic performance on a city-centre elevation does more for the reviews than any other single element of the building fabric.

What matters most on this kind of building

Acoustic performance on noisy elevations

Asymmetric laminated units — different pane thicknesses with an acoustic interlayer — outperform standard double glazing by a wide margin on traffic and nightlife noise.

Room-by-room phasing

Work is sequenced against the booking sheet, taking rooms out in small blocks so occupancy and revenue are protected.

Entrances that handle volume

Automatic sliding sets with a lobby arrangement control draughts and heat loss at a busy entrance far better than a single swing door.

Out-of-hours restrictions

In most hotels the noisy work has to happen during the day precisely because guests are asleep at night — the opposite of a retail programme.

Hotels and hospitality — common questions

What glazing reduces street noise in hotel rooms?
An asymmetric acoustic unit — for example 6.8mm acoustic laminate against 4mm with a wide cavity — typically achieves 38–42dB, against roughly 30dB for a standard 4-16-4 unit. The frame seals matter as much as the glass.
Can rooms be reglazed without closing the hotel?
Yes. Work runs in small blocks of rooms against the booking sheet. A typical room is stripped, reglazed and made good within a day, so the room returns to sale quickly.
Does secondary glazing work as well as replacement?
For acoustics it often works better, because the wide air gap between the existing window and the secondary unit is what kills low-frequency noise. It is also the usual answer on listed and conservation-area buildings.
