Glazing for offices and workplaces

Office glazing splits into two very different jobs: the facade, which is a construction project with weather and programme risk, and the internal fit-out, which is an occupied-building exercise measured in noise, dust and disruption.

What matters most on this kind of building

Acoustic separation that actually works

Meeting rooms and HR spaces need double glazed partitions taken to slab or with a properly detailed head barrier. A 45dB screen under an open ceiling void performs like a 30dB one.

Working around occupation

Facade replacement runs floor by floor behind temporary screens; partitions go in with low noise during the day and slab-fixing out of hours.

Part L on refurbishment

Where more than a set proportion of the facade is replaced, the thermal element usually has to be upgraded. That is a whole-window calculation, not a glass one.

Solar gain on south and west faces

Glare and afternoon overheating drive more workplace complaints than winter cold. Solar control glass is far cheaper than adding cooling.

Offices and workplace — common questions

Can office glazing be replaced without decanting the floor?
In most cases yes. Facade work runs in zones behind temporary weather screens, and partition work is comparatively clean. Expect some out-of-hours working for slab fixings and any structural cutting.
What acoustic rating does a meeting room need?
42–48dB from a double glazed partition is the normal target for a room where the conversation should not be intelligible outside. Single glazed at 30–38dB is fine for general division and breakout areas.
Does replacing office windows trigger a Part L upgrade?
Replacing windows is controlled work and the replacements must meet the current standard for thermal elements. Where a large proportion of the facade changes, wider consequential improvements can also be triggered.
