Glazing for industrial and logistics buildings

Industrial glazing is mostly about two things people rarely think of as glazing: daylight through the roof, and keeping a warehouse operating while any of it is replaced.

What matters most on this kind of building

Non-fragile rooflights

Falls through fragile rooflights remain a leading cause of fatal accidents in this sector. Any roof reached for maintenance needs non-fragile glazing or permanent protection.

Daylight without solar gain

Roof glazing cuts lighting load significantly but adds summer heat. Diffusing and solar-control specifications hold the daylight benefit without the overheating.

Impact resistance at low level

Screens and office pod glazing near MHE traffic take knocks. Laminated glass and protective barriers are cheaper than repeated replacement.

Operating through the works

Warehouses cannot generally stop. Work is zoned around racking and traffic routes with exclusion areas agreed against live operations.

Industrial and logistics — common questions

How do I know if my rooflights are fragile?
Assume they are unless there is test evidence to ACR[M]1 saying otherwise. Age is the strongest indicator — older GRP and thin polycarbonate rooflights degrade and become fragile even where they were not originally.
Can rooflights be replaced while the warehouse operates?
Usually yes, working zone by zone with the area below cordoned. The exclusion zone underneath and the racking layout normally set the sequence rather than the roof itself.
What glazing suits an office pod inside a warehouse?
Laminated glass at low level where MHE traffic passes, with a physical barrier in front of it. Acoustic partitions are also worth specifying — plant and MHE noise carries straight into a single-glazed pod.
